On a quiet residential road about 5 minutes from Mitaka Station is Hitokokyū. The vegetarian restaurant has a nutritious set lunch with essential dish choices like carrot croquette, vegetarian gyōza potstickers, and kurumabu wheat gluten cutlets. Diners decide both genmai brown rice or a kōso genmai, fermented brown rice with azuki beans. The meal is rounded out with miso soup and at this time burdock root kinpira and a simmered dish of hijiki sea vegetable, turnips with broccoli, and a grape kanten jelly. The lunch set was 1,800 yen ($12).
Hitokokyū is a smaller restaurant. I like to recommend calling forward to make a reservation when you’re going to make a particular journey there.
