Tsunahachi つな八 is a historic tempura store in Shinjuku. This yr it celebrates 100 years.

I like the department at Shinjuku Takashimaya because it’s brightly lit and conveniently situated close to the station. The primary store has an outdated retro really feel to it, which can be cool. At Takashimaya we requested counter seats and will look ahead to the counter to open up. My favourite method to get pleasure from tempura.

Spring is known for sansai mountain greens which can be loved for barely bitter flavors. My sansai tempura lunch included:
tara no me – angelica buds
fuki no to – butterbur
na no hana – rape blossoms
kogomi – fern
udo – spikenard (Aralia cordata)

The kakiage cake of chopped greens ends the meal. My mates had the standard lunch of shrimp, fish and greens and the tendon tempura over rice with a candy soy sauce.

Tsunahachi at Shinjuku Takashimaya is on the thirteenth ground (I imagine that’s right!).
